Sherrill Community Pool – Background
The Sherrill Community Pool has been part of our community for 55 years. A 2024 engineering report identified major structural issues with the large pool, estimated to cost $750,000 to $1 million to repair.
*These repairs would only address the structure of the large pool. They would not cover the mechanicals, pumps, or electrical systems, or upgrades to the pool house, deck, wading pool or other areas.

*Repairs are expected to extend the large pool’s life by up to 20 years, though additional upkeep would still be needed for both the large and wading pool.

*The City budgets approximately $120,000 per year to operate both pools, while revenue brings in less than $20,000 annually. Most costs are for lifeguards, chlorine, and daily operations.

*Both pools are only open about 8 weeks (55 days) each summer. According to our usage records the last couple of years, about only 6% of City of Sherrill households use the pools, with half of overall users now coming from outside the City of Sherrill.

Private and public grant funding is currently not available since most state programs are targeted to disadvantaged/underserved communities. If the pool cannot be repaired, the City has begun talks with the Oneida YMCA to ensure swim lessons and other programs continue.

Question Title

* 1. The City Commission is asking Sherrill property owners (only):
Should the City borrow money (through bonding) to make the necessary structural repairs to the large pool?

Borrowing funds would result in a dedicated City tax increase, in addition to normal annual adjustments for other City services.

For a home assessed at $100,000, the estimated “pool” tax increase could be $80–$120 per year for 15 years.
